808 Bobby on Beatstars!

I have used several different music players for my beats and Beat Stars continues to be my go to platform. While I believe Airbit is a good option as well, I find that I enjoy the Beat Stars community and chatting with like minded producers. Take a listen to some of my beats and songs that I have uploaded on my custom store below.

I'm thinking about an upgrade.

So I have been using PreSonus interfaces for the last several years and it has been a difficult for me to decide if I want to switch or not. While the Audio Box line of interfaces is a fantastic way to get started making music quickly, I am starting to think I would like to get the highest level of quality possible. So I am thinking that this might be the answer. Universal Audio has really nice Pro level interfaces that come equipped with shark processors in them and just to get started, I think I might invest in the Solo version just to see what all the hype is about. If I do make the upgrade, I will be sure to review and compare.

Condenser Microphones!

If you are trying to lay down some nice vocal tracks or record some acoustic instruments, you will need to get your hands on a good condenser mic. These mics are a lot more sensitive than dynamic mics and there are a lot of them out on the market. If you are just starting out then you may not want to spend several hundred dollars on a new microphone so I will provide a list of cheaper mics that I believe will get the job done nicely. Please be aware that in most cases you will just want a standard cardioid condenser mic and will probably not need multiple polar patterns. Cardioid pattern will pick up sound coming from the front of the mic. Figure 8 will pick up sound from front and back and Omni-directional will pick up sound from all directions. Again, standard cardioid will be just fine. Here is a short list of budget friendly mics that will have you on your way.
1. Audio Technica AT2020
2. Sterling ST51
3. AKG P120
4. Blue Spark
5. Rode NT1

(DAW) Digital Audio Workstation

When getting started with digital music production, you will need to select a DAW, also known as a Digital Audio Workstation. I don't recommend spending too much time worrying about which one you should use. Do a little research and pick one that looks interesting to you. I started with FL Studio and Sonar Home Studio almost 14 years ago but I currently Use Studio One 4 as my go to DAW. Many companies will have free trial versions of their software that offer the basic features to get you started. You can also shop around online retailers for deals or you may acquire a new DAW when purchasing a new MIDI controller or audio interface. Here is a list of Digital Audio Workstations that I recommend:
1. Studio One
2. FL Studio
3. Cubase
4. Pro Tools
5. Reason
6. Logic
7. Ableton
8. Mix Craft

Top places to buy music gear!

This is my top 5 list of places I go to buy new music gear.

This list is in order from number 1 to number 5 and I have no affiliation with any of these music stores. I chose Sweetwater as number 1 based on their outstanding customer service. GuitarCenter comes in at number 2. They have good customer service as well and I actually live fairly close to a store location. Musician's Friend is number 3. They always seem to have some good deals and sales. AMS is number 4. They seem to carry some brands that I haven't found elsewhere. If all else fails then I normally turn to number 5. Everybody knows that Amazon sales just about anything you could possibly be looking for. So if you are just getting into music production or creation and don't know where to start, any of the places I listed are good choices and if you shop around some of these stores will price match. I hope this is helpful and let's make music!

Scott Storch and MPCX!

One of my alltime favorite producers "Scott Storch" kills it quick with the new MPCX!

Audio Interfaces!

As you get started setting up your home or project studio, you will need to select an audio interface. This audio interface will be your external sound card and this will be how you connect instruments, microphones and speakers to your computer. There are many good interfaces on the market to choose from. The one in the picture shown above is, in my opinion, the best one for the money. It is the Audio Box iTwo from Presonus. This interface, like many others, comes with a free version of software. However, Presonus makes their very own high powered DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software and it is called Studio One. This is my personal DAW of choice and I highly recommend it. Please note that I am in no way connected or in collaboration with Presonus I just enjoy using their products. Now if you would like some other recommendations, here are some other highly rated interfaces to look up: Focusrite Scarlett, M Audio Fast Track, Steinberg UR22, Roland Quad Capture and Yamaha Audiogram. As always thank you for visiting my site and happy recording!
