Pitfall Three: Budgets
Pick your budget, and stick to it. If you don't,
you'll hemorrhage money. Decide an amount and be firm with yourself.
Going to spend $1000? You can get good sound for that money. Not
fantastic, but pretty good. Going to spend $6000? Now you are getting into the serious "good-fi"
territory. You have lots of choices, and if you spend two thirds of it on
a pair of speakers, things can get very good indeed. Lots of creditable
speaker manufacturers have great stuff in the $4000 range.
Speaker selection is a personal thing. You would think the goal is to
simply look for a speaker that reproduces sound accurately, but they don't
exist. Every speaker distorts.
Your goal is to find a speaker that distorts nicely, and what you
consider nice depends on your ears. You need to read reviews, and get out
and listen to lots of speakers.
If you just go out and buy a speaker based on price, odds are very high
that you will be disappointed.
