It's a sickness.
It starts when you hear a piece of music you like on a system you can't
afford, and you suddenly realize that your old college stereo has been
robbing you of half the music. Or you hear someone's decent HT (Home
Theater), with thundering bass and clear dialogue, and, well...
So you drop by Radio Shack and you pick up a new system. And it just
doesn't sound good. In disgust you take it back, and you start looking
around for something better.
Welcome to the fold. The sickness we call audiophilia has set in.
You'll need to get used to that feeling of wondering if there is something
better: once you start down this path, you're always going to be looking
for something better. Audiophilia is not a disease that ever lets go.
But there are ways to minimize the ravages. So sit back and we'll tour the
audio high end world, with special attention to how to avoid the pitfalls.
